Beauty Resolutions

Next year, I promise to treat my skin, hair and nails with the utmost respect. Thus, a few resolutions:
1) I will moisturize daily with SPF 15 or higher – that goes for my arms and neck too
2) I will straighten my hair only once a week – and will keep the straightener on low heat.
3) I will indulge in my favorite fragrances at least 4 times a year.
4) I will be gentle to my skin when there's a blemish.
5) I will use only fine microbeads for exfoliation – nothing too harsh.
6) I will stay out of the sun and instead use self-tanner.
7) I will get pedicures, even in winter.
8) I will stop cutting my cuticles.
9) I will use a deep conditioning treatment on my hair at least once a month.
10) I will get a trim regularly.

Catch the Wave

Here's the thing: I say you can never go wrong with Neutrogena. And I'm right again—this Wave™ DUO Power Cleanser rocks!

Ok, it looks weird, but really, it fits perfectly in my hand and lets me, with a light touch, gently cleanse my skin like my delightful but can't-get-in-to-see-her-often-enough facialist does. And it's fun! Truly, I can't wait to wash my face again—something, I confess, I find somewhat of a bore/chore. But best of all, my skin was definitely smoother and brighter than it has been for a while—and this season, isn't that what it's all about: shiny happy faces? Well, wave hello to mine!

Beauty Secret: Picture Perfect: Fake Eyelashes

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009
thumbnail

I knew Diana had some secret up her sleeve. Every time I looked at pictures of her, her eyes seemed perfectly framed and her face just seemed to "pop." Me? Well, I am lucky if both my eyes are open. So I asked her one day – and the answer totally caught me by surprise: Fake eyelashes. When she is going out, or she knows she is going to be in a lot of pictures, she always puts them on. "They just really make your eyes stand out," she says.

I don't know why I was so surprised - I guess I always thought fake lashes were sort of for Halloween or something. Diana has already started using them on some of our friends – and they love it. I can't wait for my turn.

Spa in a Mug

Monday, December 28th, 2009

On a chilly winter's eve, there's nothing like a long soak in a hot bath. But that's not always in the cards. After all, there are friends to see, meals to cook, books to read, television shows to keep up with. I have found a new evening ritual that has some of the benefits of a bath but is even less of a production. And given that taking a bath isn't all that hard, that's saying something. I've taken to making myself a pot of tea every evening before bed. I started with chamomile and have branched out to new flavors and flowers like lavender, mint, African roiboos, hibiscus--anything without caffeine. Most herbs have medicinal properties--through the ages, lavender and chamomile have been used to treat everything from the bubonic plague to carbuncles to depression. It is therapeutic: the fragrance is lovely, the steam opens the sinuses and pores, the mug warms the hands, the hot liquid gives the insides a bath and some herbs can soothe the nerves. But for me the most healing thing about this ritual is that it results in my sitting still to savor a moment or two at the end of a long day. Be on the lookout for herbal teas in your coffee store or Walmart. All you have to do to enjoy it is relax.

Tis the Season

We're having a holiday party tonight! It's our first formal soiree since my daughter arrived. We're even getting a sitter for the night to watch our precious girl, plus a few of our other friends' kids. So guess what, I'm dressing up! I almost don't recognize myself – I'm in a shimmery silver shift dress and a pair of 4-inch strappy heels. I've even broken out some jewelry – the good stuff – a sapphire necklace with matching earrings. My legs are clean-shaven, my hair is straightened and smooth and I actually got a manicure today. I'm feeling good. I've got my favorite liquid eyeliner on, a pale shimmery shadow on my lids and for drama I'm wearing Maybelline Color Sensational Plum Perfect lip color. Oh yeah, it's gonna be a good night.

Intensely Fabulous

Blonde hair=processed hair=damaged hair. Yep, that's me. I long for the supershiny, healthy curls of my youth…but they are so long gone. So what's a bottle blonde to do? Get some help already! DoveÆ Intense Damage Therapy Shampoo to the rescue.

It's supposed to "repair severe, accumulated damage by penetrating into the finest lines and breaks of every strand for intense hydration.” It also claims to "strengthen each hair strand, reducing hair breakage and split ends, leaving hair healthy and strong from root to tip.” Well, frankly, I couldn't have said it better myself. No, wait, yes I can: OMG my hair is shiny and soft and curling just right. This product is destined to be a "manestay” in my shower.

The Wand is the Difference

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

For my friend Diana, the right mascara wand makes all the difference between messy, clumpy lashes and elegant, long ones. Her favorite? Loreal's Telescopic Mascara. Traditional mascara wands look like brushes– with fluffy round bristles on the end. But the Telescopic wand works more like a comb – with straight, plastic separators on the end. The result is nothing short of perfection every time, Diana says. "It doesn't clump and it makes your lashes look defined. It completely separates your lashes."

She is so enamored of the wand that she even uses it when she puts on fake eyelashes. "It makes it all blend into one fabulous lash line."

She also loves that she can find it just about anywhere – like when she is at Walmart picking up some essentials. Clump-free AND convenient: Mascara doesn't get any better than this.

Lip Fix

Monday, December 21st, 2009
thumbnail

I do not believe the old wives' tales. Lip balm is not addictive. That said, if I leave my house without a tube of the stuff, I start to feel uncomfortable, a little shaky, even. Naked. It's not that I require tasty and kissable lips at all times, though I admit it's nice; the sad truth is my lips are prone to chapping. I have my favorite lip salves--among them plain old Vaseline petroleum jelly and Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm in the little metal tin--but I'm always willing to try something new. Which I often do, since I'm constantly picking up new products on the fly. I was lucky enough to be shopping at Walmart when my lips started feeling parched, and I knew I could remain calm. The solution was at hand. I strolled calmly over to the beauty department picked up a tube of Noah's Naturals peppermint lip balm. It goes on smooth and the peppermint is cool and refreshing. Ingredients include avocado, vitamin E, aloe vera and cucumber, which serve to moisten my lips naturally. It's also available in rosemary, which I'll try next time I need a lip fix.

The Ultimate Stocking Stuffer

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

When my husband caught a glimpse of the Neutrogena Wave Duo, he had more than a few cracks to make about it. Yeah, I was skeptical too, at first. Would a vibrating facial buff really work better than a good old-fashioned washcloth and some elbow grease? Well, to my surprise (and his), it does! The Wave Duo is a handheld battery-operated device, to which you apply a cleansing pad. You moisten the pad with a little water, power it up, apply it to your face and voila! The dirt and make up disappear! The Wave Duo has two settings – one for "deep pore cleansing" and one for "gentle daily cleansing." I have tried both speeds and both seemed gentle enough for daily use and left my skin feeling refreshed and visibly smoother. Another plus, it actually comes with a battery – a big help for a busy mom.

It's "Kiss"met

Friday, December 18th, 2009
thumbnail

To go with my glam lashes, I figured I'd try Revlon Colorstay Ultimate Liquid Lipstick—perfect for this season of partying, overeating and (hopefully) added glitz and glamour. Why? Because it's glossy lipcolor that doesn't budge for 12 hours and conditions—all in one step?

Ok, the best test: a day at the office with drinks after. I mixed #1 Nude with Platinum Petal and yapped my day away with not a hint of de-glossing…then dashed off for cocktails and Italian appetizers at my favorite after-work spot with some of the gals. To my surprise—and all of my friends'—the color lasted! What? I know! I'm kissing my old glosses goodbye!
